What is Proposition 65?

Some chemicals on the two Proposition 65 lists, such as lead, cadmium, and arsenic, are naturally found in the environment, literally all over the world.  Therefore, some products that naturally contain these chemicals can be required to carry a Proposition 65 warning notice, although, as noted above, not in the case of foods.

California’s Proposition 65 requires certain businesses to warn customers about significant exposure to chemicals the state lists as causing cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Dietary supplements sold to California customers can be subject to these requirements.

A warning does not, by itself, determine whether a product is safe or unsafe. Whether a supplement needs a warning depends on the chemical and the expected exposure from using the product.

When a warning is required for an online purchase, it must be presented in connection with the product or prominently before checkout. This information page does not replace a warning for a specific supplement.
